On the participation of employees of the institutions «State Archive of Public Associations of the Gomel Region» and «State Archive of the Gomel Region» in the opening of the photo-documentary exhibition «Stolen Childhood»

On November 16, 2023, as part of events dedicated to the Year of Peace and Creation, employees of the institutions «State Archives of Public Associations of the Gomel Region» and «State Archives of the Gomel Region» took part in the opening of the photo-documentary exhibition «Stolen Childhood», which took place in the southern gallery of the State Historical and Cultural Institution «Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble».

The main goal of the joint project is to form an objective idea of the events of the Great Patriotic War and is logically divided into several parts: children’s images, children’s stories, places of memory and consequences.

The exhibition is presented with photo collages based on materials from the museum’s funds, local history museums of the Gomel region, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus, the State Archive of Public Associations of the Gomel Region, the State Archive of the Gomel Region, the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo and Sound Documents, and the Prosecutor’s Office of the Gomel Region.

The exhibition includes a number of documents identified by archivists in the funds of the state archive: a memorandum by the secretary of the Gomel Regional Committee of the LKSMB Alekseev «On the work of children’s recreation grounds in 1944 in the Gomel region», an information note «On the preparation for winter of orphanages in the Gomel region», a memorandum to the secretary of the Central Committee KPB K.T. Mazurov «On blowing up children with explosive means on the territory of the Gomel region.

The photo-documentary project introduced visitors to the true stories of children, told about children’s transit and distribution camps created by the Nazis in the Gomel region, and also talked about the consequences of the war and the creation of orphanages.
