Historical background
The Archives was established in December 1963 as the Branch of the State Archives of Vitebsk Region in Orsha on the basis of the Orsha, Dubrovno, Senno, Tolochin and Bogushevsk district archives that functioned from 1936 and the Orsha municipal archives that functioned from 1957.
In May 1996 the Archives received its present name of the Zonal State Archives in Orsha.
In July 2006 the Archives acquired the records dating from 1917 to 1941 previously held at the State Archives of Vitebsk Region (in all, 107 fonds, 12 039 items).
