The National Historical Archives of Belarus reveals secrets: how Belarusian children were educated and raised over a hundred years ago

On the first day of summer, when all of Belarus celebrates International Children’s Day, the National Historical Archives of Belarus opened a unique documentary exhibition at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, «Children’s Education in the Secondary Education System in Belarusian Lands in the 19th – Early 20th Centuries». This is not just dry historical information, but living evidence of how traditions of caring for the younger generation emerged.

Aksana Zenko, Head of the Archive’s Research, Publication, and Exhibition Sector, guided visitors through the past. Her story brought scenes from the lives of high school students of past centuries to life. The archival documents on display vividly demonstrate how the physical education and training system was built, the crafts and useful skills students mastered, how medical care functioned in schools over a hundred years ago, and what the first educational excursions and trips for young Minsk residents and residents of other Belarusian lands were like.

The exhibition clearly demonstrates that the foundations for modern child care, their health, and harmonious development were laid by our ancestors.
