On April 14, 2025, at the branch of the city library No.15 of Gomel, senior researcher Maya Vashchenko held a lesson dedicated to the 39th anniversary of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The lesson discussed the topic of state protective measures to eliminate the consequences of the accident.
Maya Vashchenko told the 9th grade students of the State Educational Institution «Secondary School No. 15 of Gomel» about the State Program for the Elimination of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant for the Period 2020-2025. The state program contains a set of environmental measures aimed at monitoring and improving the radiation background. The program provides for the provision of benefits to victims of the Chernobyl disaster, health resort treatment and diagnostics for children living in contaminated areas, reconstruction of children’s radiation health centers, etc.
The students were shown a documentary film by the Belarusian State Film and Photo Archive «Overcoming the Black Reality» and «A Third Century Without Man» about the Polesie State Radiation and Ecological Reserve. The documentaries introduced the children to the events of April 26, 1986 at the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl and to the species of animals that live in the radioactive contamination zone abandoned by humans.
