Exhibition of archival documents for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia
On June 17, 2024, the opening of the sixty-sixth session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia took place in the Oval Hall of the Government House. As part of this event, the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus prepared an exhibition of archival documents dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders.
The path to liberation from the Nazi occupiers began in the fall of 1943, when the first cities of Belarus were liberated. In the summer of 1944, the Red Army continued the liberation of the republic during the Belarusian operation codenamed «Bagration», which began on June 23, 1944. It was carried out by troops of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Belorussian Fronts, 1st Baltic, Dnieper military flotilla, 1st Army of the Polish Army, partisan formations. The troops were commanded by famous Soviet military leaders – Marshal of the Soviet Union K.K. Rokossovsky, army generals I.Kh. Bagramyan, G.F. Zakharov, I.D. Chernyakhovsky. The actions of the fronts were coordinated by representatives of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command – Marshals of the Soviet Union A.M. Vasilevsky and G.K. Zhukov.
The powerful blow of the Red Army merged with the decisive actions of the Belarusian partisans, who for the first time during the Great Patriotic War established communications and operational interaction with the troops of the fronts. The people’s avengers attacked the enemy’s communications, disrupted the supply of reinforcements, weapons and ammunition to the front line, and organized ambushes.
The National Archives of the Republic of Belarus presented at the exhibition the most interesting documents from the archival funds – orders of the Central Headquarters of the Partisan Movement (TSSHPD) and the Belarusian Headquarters of the Partisan Movement (BSHPD), unique military maps, diagrams, cipher telegrams, reports, command orders, which reflect planning activities and the conduct of the operation to liberate Belarus, examples of mass heroism shown in these battles, award and personal sheets for recording partisan personnel, personal files of Heroes of the Soviet Union P. Masherov, S. Vaupshasov, K. Zaslonov, V. Korzh, documents provided by the Central Archive Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for Operation Bagration. Also presented are materials on the activities of deputies of the Supreme Council of the BSSR of the first convocation – reports of deputies of the Supreme Council of the BSSR to the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BSSR on their work, questionnaires of deputies of the Supreme Council of the Belarusian SSR, postcards and letters from deputies from the front to the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, death notices , letters from relatives with a request to inform about the location of their husband or son, who is a deputy of the Supreme Council of the BSSR.
NARB is showing many documents for the first time.
The exhibition of archival documents was visited by the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus I.P. Sergeenko, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia V.V. Volodin, and deputies of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Director of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus O.L. Voinov and the Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus A.K. Demyanuk.
