«Everyone called him Glebushka» – on the 125th anniversary of the birth of G.P.Glebov – Soviet, Belarusian theater and film actor, People’s Artist of the USSR

May 11, 2024 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Soviet, Belarusian theater and film actor, People’s Artist of the USSR Gleb Pavlovich Glebov (Sorokin).

 

He began his stage activities in 1921 in traveling troupes in Ukraine. Since 1926 – actor of the 1st Belarusian Drama Theater (now the Belarusian Theater named after Yanka Kupala in Minsk).

An actor of great comedic talent, organic and flexible, an outstanding improviser. Glebov’s talent was revealed in the 1930s. The treasury of the Belarusian theater includes his famous roles: Kroplya («Konstantin Zaslonov» by A. Mavzon) and Gleb Glebov – Tulyaga («Who Laughs Last» by K. Krapiva). In total he performed more than 160 roles of different genres. Many of his characters have become household names. Those who remember this actor on stage talk about the extraordinary kindness that emanated from him both in life and in the theater. Regardless of the role that the playwright assigned to his character, Glebov knew how to attract the attention of the public and make the smallest role significant and interesting.

Twice became a laureate of the USSR State Prize. He worked on the radio, where fairy tales for children performed by the artist were especially popular.

Since 1949, he acted in films: «Konstantin Zaslonov», «Our Neighbors», «The Polesie Legend», «A Strict Woman», «First Tests», «Eastern Corridor», etc. In 1943 he headed the front-line brigade of the theater.

From 1941 to 1947 was the artistic director of the theater. Yanka Kupala. He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 6th convocation.

Currently, the funds of the Belarusian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents contain over 100 storage units of photographic documents for 1935-1962, 20 storage units of film documents for 1946-1995, 40 storage units of audio documents for 1943-1983 related to the activities of G.P.Glebova.

Gleb Pavlovich Glebov (Sorokin) died on March 3, 1967 in Minsk. He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery.
