«Day in History» – Victory Day (a joint project of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Tatarstan)

As part of the implementation of the joint project of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Tatarstan «A Day in History», the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus and the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan present archival documents dedicated to Victory Day.

The date May 9 was not chosen for the project by chance, because Victory Day is one of the most important holidays in the history of both republics.

Victory in the Great Patriotic War became possible only thanks to the heroism of the Soviet people. Representatives of different nationalities fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism.

The archival funds of Belarus and Tatarstan contain documents that testify to the tragic events of the war and confirm the feat of the Soviet people in the victory over the Nazi invaders.

More than 1,300,000 Belarusians fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. 374,000 partisans and over 70,000 underground fighters fought in the enemy-occupied territory of the BSSR. In total, 213 partisan brigades operated, which included about 1,000 detachments and 258 detachments acted independently. Hidden partisan reserves amounted to about 400,000 local residents. The national resistance movement that unfolded in Belarus has no analogues in world history in terms of scale and scope. The scale of the nationwide war against the Nazi invaders is evidenced by the fact that on the territory of Belarus, partisans and underground fighters destroyed a colossal number of invaders and their accomplices, derailed 11,128 trains and 34 armored trains, defeated 948 enemy headquarters and garrisons, destroyed 1,355 tanks and armored vehicles.

For heroic deeds in the Great Patriotic War, 449 Belarusians and natives of Belarus were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 73 became full holders of the Order of Glory, 4 Belarusians became twice Heroes of the Soviet Union (P.Ya. Golovachev, I.I. Gusakovsky, S.F. Shutov, I.I. Yakubovsky).

The funds of the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus contain documents of the Belarusian headquarters of the partisan movement, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, and the Supreme Council of the BSSR. Several of the most interesting artifacts are presented in this publication.

The State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan has prepared a virtual exhibition «Gazi Zagitov: Tatar trace on the Reichstag» for Victory Day.

Victory Day is, first of all, a holiday of courage, honor and bravery, a reminder of how important it is to be a united people, because it was by uniting, standing together in defense of the Motherland, that the Soviet people were able to win Victory over fascism.
