On March 7, 2024, on the eve of the spring holiday – Women’s Day, the National Archives prepared the exhibition «Women in History» at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus.
In many countries around the world, March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day – a holiday of common women’s solidarity. On this day, it is customary to congratulate beloved women: wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and girlfriends.
In Belarus it is a public holiday. The history of the holiday is closely connected with the movement for women’s rights. On March 8, 1857, thousands of women took part in the so-called Empty Pot March in New York.
Despite the fact that the demands of women were not taken into account, the day of the event forever went down in the history of the social movement.
In the history of any country there are many bright, talented women whose activities serve as role models; they are the pride of their country. For Belarus, such a bright personality is Nadezhda Grigorievna Grekova, the first Chairman of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, the only woman in the political history of the Soviet Union elected to such a high post in a popular election.
The National Archives contains posters-biographies of the elections for deputies of Larisa Alexandrovskaya, opera singer, candidate for deputy of the Supreme Council; The personal funds contain documents of Valentina Alekseevna Klochkova, Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, and Nina Leonovna Snezhkova, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR.
Belarusian women made a significant contribution to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, having gone through a glorious military path, primarily as doctors, snipers and translators, selflessly working in the rear, and then restoring the economy destroyed by the war.
The archive contains personal files of women – Heroes of the Soviet Union, combat leaflets and handwritten journals of partisan formations, which by March 8, colorfully decorated, were entirely dedicated to women, orders for awarding and encouraging distinguished female partisans.
Among the most famous and honored women in the history of Belarus, Stefania Staniuta should be noted, who embodied on the screen a number of characteristic images of women from the people who endure any trials with dignity.
There were few families in the Soviet Union in which actress Galina Makarova was not considered a member of the family. She was called the «All-Union Grandmother» for her strength of spirit, kindness and generosity, for the wise thoughts that she conveyed from the screen to the public, remaining sincere and honest both on the set and in life.
The archival fund of the «Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus» presents documents about the awards of S.Stanyuta and G.Makarova, Belarusian theater and film actresses who have earned great love and gratitude from many generations of viewers.
The names of outstanding representatives of the fair half of humanity are inscribed in golden letters in the history of our country. But a woman has always been and remains the most beautiful, the most caring, the most desirable and most beloved, a loving mother, beloved wife, wise and kind grandmother.
