To the 305th anniversary of the birth of St. George of Konissky

November 20 marks the 305th anniversary of the birth of the Archbishop of Mogilev, Mstislav and Orsha (1755-1795) St. George of Konissky.

As a philosopher, teacher, theologian and public figure in the Commonwealth, and then in the Russian Empire, Georgy Konissky left a memory of himself that was preserved by the inhabitants of the city of Mogilev even in Soviet times.

So, for example, in the archival fund of the Mogilev regional branch of the Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (hereinafter referred to as the Society), in the institution «State Archive of the Mogilev Region», the correspondence of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments with their colleagues from the city of Mogilev is stored, about the perpetuation of Georgy Konissky and the search for a place burial.

It should be noted that the answer from Mogilev was the former director of the Mogilev regional archive Vladimir Danilovich Efimov, and at that time the deputy chairman of the Mogilev regional branch of the Society.

It is worth noting that already in the post-Soviet years, a memorial plaque was installed on the bishop’s house in 1990, in 1993 a street was named after Georgy Konissky – Bishop’s Val Konissky, and in 2022 a monument was erected to him on the top platform of the stairs leading to the park «Underground».

By the decision of the Synod of the Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church in Minsk on August 6, 1993, Archbishop George (Konissky) was canonized as a locally venerated saint. A service and an akathist were composed for him.

On November 30, 2017, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church adopted a decision on the general church glorification of St. George, with the establishment of the celebration of the day of memory on August 6 in a new style.
