Within the Year of Historical Memory and in honor of the City Day, the State Archives of Grodno Region posts on its website a virtual exhibition “Postwar Grodno”, dedicated to the peaceful life of Grodno residents after the Great Patriotic War, the restoration of the city and the revival of its industry and culture. On display are the documents from the archive collections: decisions of the executive committees of the Grodno Regional and City Councils of Workers’ Deputies, data on the restoration and improvement of Grodno, posters and programs for cultural events, and more.
The documents demonstrate that despite all the pain of loss, destruction and fear, hunger and death, the life of the town continued. Gradually, the understanding came that the terrible was over and peaceful life should be settled. The destroyed factories were restored, bridges were built, trees grew green, Grodno citizens walked with children in new parks and flowers blossomed in flowerbeds. Grodno residents sought to acquire new professions, master the higher levels of education.
During the German occupation the first Belarusian Grodno Zoo, the main attraction of the city, was almost completely destroyed. The most valuable and rare species of animals were taken to Germany by the Nazis, while the rest were destroyed. The decision of the Grodno Executive Committee to resume the Zoo was a great joy to the citizens of Grodno.
The documents presented at the virtual exhibition have an important scientific, historical and patriotic significance, and make it possible to evaluate the enormous contribution of the people who restored the city from the ruins and breathed peaceful life into it.
