Representatives of the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (BGAMLI) took part in a discussion on the portrayal of women
On November 3, 2026, D.S.Samokhvalov, a leading research fellow, and I.A.Lobovich, a leading archivist from the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (BGAMLI), attended a round table titled «Bright Names: Literary and Cinematic Portrayals of Belarusian Women, Past and Present». The event was held in conjunction with the «Year of the Belarusian Woman» and the Minsk International Film Festival «Listapad». It was organized at the House of Writers by the Union of Writers of Belarus, the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers, the Synodal Information Department of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, and the Center for the Study of Belarusian Culture, Language, and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences.
The image of a woman holds a significant place in the work of writers and filmmakers; however, it can serve various functions—ranging from attracting an audience to a creative work to contributing to a comprehensive, realistic perspective on the world. This point was highlighted several times by the participants. Notable contributions included those by L.S.Ananich, Chair of the Union of Publishers and Distributors of Print Media, who assured the attendees that the «Year of the Woman» is not merely a one-off initiative, but an integral part of the Belarusian state’s domestic policy; I.I.Kalacheva, Doctor of Historical Sciences, who presented her monograph «The Traditional Belarusian Code» («Tradytsyyny kod belaruski»); and A.A.Karpilova, Head of the Department of Screen Arts at the Center for the Study of Belarusian Culture, Language, and Literature, who addressed the specific subject of how women are portrayed in cinema.
The invitation extended to representatives of the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (BGAMLI) to participate in the round table is due not only to the institution’s long-standing, close ties with the Union of Writers of Belarus and the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers, but also to the systematic cultural and scholarly work it carries out.
