History of the Church of the Intercession in Polotsk

The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Polotsk, restored in 2004, boasts a rich and multifaceted history spanning approximately two and a half centuries; its destiny—marked by both bright and tragic events—is of great interest to researchers of the Polotsk region.

From its founding in 1781 on the outskirts of Polotsk as a cemetery church, the building was made of wood. A turning point in its history came in 1804, when the Church of the Intercession was granted the status of a «sobor» (collegiate church), effectively elevating its rank to that of a cathedral.

On May 21, 1900, a fire destroyed a significant portion of the city’s wooden structures, including the church building and over a hundred homes. However, thanks to the efforts of the parishioners, the church’s valuables—icons, books, and archives—were saved. This incident spurred a fundraising campaign to rebuild the church.

Construction of a new stone church began on May 21, 1905. The new Church of the Intercession was consecrated by Bishop Innocent on October 19, 1914. In the early 1930s, the church was closed by the Soviet authorities, and the clergy were subjected to repression.

After the liberation of Polotsk in 1944, the church remained in a state of neglect. Subsequently, the building was converted to house a confectionery factory.

A severe fire at the facility in 1967 completely destroyed the remains of the former church, and its walls were dismantled. During this period, the existence of the Church of the Intercession gradually faded from the collective memory of Polotsk’s residents, and its historical significance long remained overlooked by both local historians and professional researchers.

The revival of the Polotsk-Vitebsk Eparchy initiated the reconstruction of the lost Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Polotsk; the project began with archaeological surveys in 1991 and the consecration of the site in 1992. Following the laying of the foundation in 1997, active construction resumed in 2003 with the support of the clergy, city authorities, and local residents. The church was ceremoniously opened and consecrated in October 2004, on the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.
