Maslenitsa Celebrations and Church Traditions: A Meeting of Clergy and Archivists Held at the Zonal State Archive in Molodechno
An engaging and informative meeting dedicated to Maslenitsa folk traditions and the role of the church in the spiritual life of society was held at the Zonal State Archive in Molodechno. The event was initiated by the regional branch of the Belaya Rus public organization.
At the beginning of the meeting, Maria Mechkovskaya, an archivist in the Document Use and Publication Department, immersed the participants in the history of Maslenitsa celebrations, using documents as evidence of the traditions of this Slavic holiday, which symbolizes the farewell to winter and the welcome of spring. A virtual exhibition based on archival materials provided a deeper understanding of how these days were celebrated in the past and the rites and rituals that accompanied Maslenitsa week. Maria Ivanovna also touched on the topic of Lent, which begins immediately after Maslenitsa, and explained the important role the church plays in this process. The Belarusian State Academy of Film and Television Arts (BSAF) film «Winter Fun», which was also screened, vividly illustrated the history of the celebration.
Father Yevgeny Savchuk, a member of the clergy, continued the discussion, discussing the Gospel truths and their significance for modern society. In the Year of the Belarusian Woman, he focused on women’s names and their role in spreading Orthodoxy in Belarus. His presentation sparked keen interest among those gathered, and many asked questions about the sacrament of baptism, exemption from fasting for the seriously ill and children, and inquired about the pace of church construction and the role of the church in strengthening family values. The dialogue was sincere and rich. At the end of the meeting, Father Yevgeny wished everyone present to fast not only physically, but also in their souls, deeds, and thoughts.
Maslenitsa is not only a holiday of joy and food, but also a time to reflect on the eternal values that unite people of different generations. Meetings like these help strengthen the spiritual foundations of our society and preserve the memory of traditions for future generations. And archivists have a role to play in this.
