On holding events in the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» within the framework of the campaign «Archives – to School»

On February 12, 2025, in the reading room of the archive, within the framework of the republican project «Archives – to School», a film lecture was held for 8th grade students of the State Educational Institution «Secondary School No.11 of Gomel». The students were shown the documentary film «Liberation» of the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents about the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders.

Senior researcher Maya Vashchenko told the children about the feat of front-line cameramen who, at the cost of their lives, filmed military operations. Thanks to the selfless feat of military cameramen, the younger generation has the opportunity to learn about the facts of the barbaric capture of our country by the Nazi invaders, large-scale destruction, grief and suffering of the Soviet people. From the military chronicle footage, the children learned about the Gomel-Rechitsa operation to liberate Gomel, from the beginning of which the liberation of Belarus began. A lesson on the topic of «Genocide of the Belarusian people» was also held for the students. Maya Vashchenko showed the students the filtration files of Belarusian citizens forcibly taken to Germany and told them about the documents presented at the exhibition «Youth spent in slavery. Letters to the Motherland», dedicated to the slave labor of young people in captivity.

At the end of the event, a tour of the archive was organized for the children. Leading archivist Marina Bortnovskaya spoke about the features of storing and repairing archival documents and answered students’ questions about the profession of an archivist.
