A joint multimedia project “Their Weapon is a Camera” presented by Cinema and Photo Archives, National Archives, Museum of History of Belarusian Cinema, Belarusfilm National Film Studio

The Belarusian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings (BGAKFFD) in collaboration with the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, the Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema and National Film Studio Belarusfilm present a multimedia project “Their Weapon is a Camera” dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Belarusian Cinema.

The program presents documentary photographs highlighting the work of frontline cinema operators M.Z. Veinerovich, M.I. Sukhova, V.P. Tseslyuk, O.B. Reizman; film documents from the BGAKFFD Cinema and Photo Archives (separate film items from special releases, frontline newsreel, chronicles and documentaries created during the Second World War: “In one of the first Partisan groups in Belarus” (1941), “Soviet Belarus” (1942), “The people’s avengers” (1943), “The rail war in the districts of Polotsk, Lepel and Mogilev” (1943), “The Battle for Vitebsk” (1944), “Our Minsk” (1944), “The liberation of Soviet Belarus” (1944).

The exposition features 32 documentary photographs from the Cinema and Photo Archives and 30 unique documents from the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus. Among these are the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR relating to the work of the Belarusian newsreel, lists of personnel of the Partisan groups who included cinema operators and their award papers.

The speakers at the presentation were Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers V. Vasilyev; film and music expert, candidate of art history at the National Academy of Sciences, Center for Studies of Belarusian Culture A. Karpilova; film director at the National Film Studio Belarusfilm, winner of the Belarus State Prize M. Zhdanovsky; film director, script writer, playwright, member of the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers V. Moroz; senior researcher at the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War N. Obukhova; director of the Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema I. Avdeyev; winners of international contests and festivals, theatre and cinema artists V. Plyashkevich and E. Dubrovskaya.
