The First International Forum of Young Historians and Archivists took place in Moscow

The First International Forum of Young Historians and Archivists took place in Moscow from 9 to 13 September 2018. The organizer of the Forum is the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists with the support of the Russian Historical Society, the History of Motherland Foundation, and the Russian State University for the Humanities. The Forum aims at consolidating young archivists in Russia and close foreign countries to create a single information field for exchange of information and further communication between young archivists in the member countries.

The young staff members of the State Archives of Minsk Region, archivists Olga Lisyuk and Natalia Kanashevskaya, attended the meeting.

The ceremonial opening of the Forum was held at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation on 10 September, with a welcome speech delivered by Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities Alexander Bezborodov, Deputy Chair of the Board of the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists Grigory Lanskoy and Dean of the Archives Faculty at the History and Archives Institute Elena Malysheva. The guests had an excursion of the Russian State University for the Humanities and the History and Archives Institute.

During the Forum the participants visited the State Archives of the Russian Federation, where they had a tour of the archives and the educational section from the experts. The original copy of Tsar Nicholas II’s Manifesto of Abdication from the Throne and his personal diary aroused an especially great interest among the participants.

On the third day of the Forum the participants went to the town of Krasnogorsk in Moscow Region to visit the Russian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings. In the cinema room of the Archives they watched a selection of unique video footage devoted to the life of the Tsar’s family in 1896-1916, the session of the First State Duma in 1906 and other important events of the past. The young archivists also visited the archival repositories of film records, photographs, video and sound recordings and got acquainted with the work of different divisions and the principles of digitization and processing of video documents on the tape.

The ceremonial closing of the First International Forum of Young Historians and Archivists took place on 13 September at the Main Archival Administration of the City of Moscow. The participants had a tour of the Central State Archives of Moscow City and later at the conference hall presented their reports and presentations on the development of archive business in their countries. Members of the State Archives of Minsk Region read their reports “The history of archive business in the Republic of Belarus” (Olga Lisyuk) and “The State Archives of Minsk Region in 1938-2018” (Natalia Kanashevskaya).
