International Scientific Roundtable Discussion «Audiovisual Documents as a Historical Source (on the 85th Anniversary of the Belarusian State Film, Photo, and Sound Documentation Archive)»

The International Scientific Roundtable Discussion «Audiovisual Documents as a Historical Source (on the 85th Anniversary of the Belarusian State Film, Photo, and Sound Documentation Archive)» was held on June 18, 2026. The event was organized by the Belarusian State Film, Photo, and Sound Documentation Archive and the Faculty of History of the Belarusian State University.

The roundtable discussion covered a wide range of issues related to the role of audiovisual documents in the construction of public and cultural memory, theoretical and methodological approaches to their study, and trends and challenges in the acquisition, description, storage, and use of this type of document.

Oleg Leonidovich Voinov, Director of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, addressed the roundtable participants with a welcoming speech. In his speech, he noted the importance of audiovisual documents as sources for scientific research, as well as the close relationship between historical science and archival practice.

In his welcoming address, Professor Alexander Gennadyevich Kokhanovsky, Dean of the Faculty of History at Belarusian State University and Doctor of Historical Sciences, also noted the scientific and practical cooperation between the institutions and their mutual interest in creating a unified scientific space for the study and use of audiovisual documents.

The roundtable participants were also welcomed by Professor Sergei Nikolaevich Khodyn, Head of the Department of Source Studies at the Faculty of History at Belarusian State University and Doctor of Historical Sciences and Associate Professor Grigory Nikolaevich Lanskoy, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists.

The event included the ceremonial signing of an agreement on cultural and scientific cooperation between the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents (BSAFD) and Belarusian State University.

Representatives of the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents (BSAFD), the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, the National Historical Archives of Belarus, the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art, and the Belarusian Research Institute of Documentation and Archival Affairs participated in the roundtable.

The international participants at the roundtable included staff from the Russian State Humanitarian University (RSHU), the Central State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Recordings (CAF) of the Committee for Archives, Documentation, and Books of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Federal State Budgetary Cultural Institution «State Film Fund of the Russian Federation».

A collective monograph is planned for publication based on the results of the roundtable.
