On the visit of the employees of the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» to the Museum of the History of the City of Gomel
On July 17, 2025, employees of the State Archives of the Gomel Region visited the Museum of the History of the City of Gomel.
The chief custodian of the funds, Anastasia Ropot, spoke about the museum building as an object of urban architecture directly related to many events in the history of the city. The city mansion was built in 1820-1822 in the Empire style under the supervision of the architect I. Dyachkov as part of the estate of Count Rumyantsev. In archival documents, it is mentioned as «a house for the summer residence of the count».
During the excursion, archivists learned about the history of the interior of the noble city mansion of the early 20th century. Anastasia Ropot spoke about the decoration of the dining room, bedroom and study. Of particular interest were the furniture of the early 20th century, porcelain and glassware, as well as the history of the appearance of portraits and photographs in the home interior. Anastasia read interesting facts from pre-revolutionary periodicals – women’s magazines that remain relevant in modern times.
Archivists got acquainted with a thematic exhibition of paintings by Belarusian artist Viktor Barabantsev, which is dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster. The exhibition evokes feelings of sadness and grief for the lost nature. A painting depicting a white stork on barbed wire evoked a special feeling of the fragility of the surrounding world. The author managed to convey the tragedy of the technological disaster and think about the future.
