On the holding of the thematic information hour «Chernobyl tragedy in archive documents» by the employees of the institution «Zonal State Archive in Orsha»

On April 24, 2025, as part of the republican campaign «Archives to School», in the state educational institution «Secondary School No.2 of Orsha named after B.L.Khigrin» with students of grades 5-6, employees of the institution «Zonal State Archive in Orsha», an information hour was held on the topic: «Chernobyl tragedy in archive documents».

The disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the most destructive in the history of nuclear energy. According to the International Nuclear Event Scale, the Chernobyl disaster is assigned the seventh, the highest level of damage caused. More than 200 thousand square kilometers were subject to radioactive contamination, of which 70% are on the territory of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. As a result of the accident at the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, vast territories of five regions of Belarus were exposed to radioactive contamination to a greater or lesser extent, in which there were 27 cities and 2697 settlements, where more than 2 million people lived. The affected area was 45.52 thousand kilometers. More than 20% of the territory of our republic was classified as victims. 115 thousand people were forced to evacuate from the 30-kilometer exclusion zone of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

It is important to remember the terrible tragedy of that time, the feat of people who showed courage and bravery in eliminating the consequences of the accident.
