«Preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is a matter of national security»: Irina Karpovich, Advisor to the Representative Office of the Permanent Committee of the Union State in Minsk

During the mediaforum in Molodechno, Advisor to the Representative Office of the Permanent Committee of the Union State in Minsk Irina Karpovich voiced an important position: «Preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is a matter of national security for the states and peoples who are the heirs of the victors».

Irina Vladimirovna noted that every year there are fewer and fewer participants in those terrible events, and therefore the infrastructure of memory plays an important role in educating the younger generation: «These are, first of all, museums, archives, memorials, films, books, events where we talk about the most terrible lessons of human history».

Irina Karpovich also recalled the crimes against humanity, unprecedented in their cruelty and scale, which are designated by the capacious word «genocide». Statistics speak for themselves: more than 200 Belarusian villages were burned down along with their inhabitants — women and infants. During the occupation, Belarus turned into a collective concentration camp. «Today there is a war for values and meaning, so our task is to form a citizen of his Fatherland who, relying on history, culture, traditional spiritual values, could resist the information war, appealing to indisputable facts», the adviser emphasized, expressing confidence that the media forum will allow an even deeper study of the pages of history, find new facts and comprehend the events of the past.
