BGAMLI virtual exhibition «My look at your packed soul… G.Garbuk» for the 90th anniversary of People’s Artist of Belarus Gennady Mikhailovich Garbuk

On July 24, 2024, People’s Artist of Belarus Gennady Garbuk turns 90 years old. The Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (hereinafter referred to as BGAMLI) has prepared a virtual exhibition «My look at your wrapped soul… G.Garbuk».

G. Garbuk was remembered by the audience as a social hero. Among the early ones is Yurka in the play «Lyavonikha» by P.Danilov at the Y.Kolas Theater. Of the later ones – Vasil («People in the Swamp» after I.Melezh), which the artist performed first in a radio show, then in a television play (received the State Prize of the BSSR in 1966) and at the Y.Kupala Theater, where the play was performed for more than 15 years in the repertoire. The image of Vasil Dyatlik created by G.Garbuk (and later the image of Timokh Chernushka in the film adaptation of «People in the Swamp» directed by V.Turov, for which he was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1984) became the embodiment of the Belarusian national character.

A peculiarity of the selection of materials for the exhibition «My look at your packed soul… G.Garbuk», prepared by BGAMLI for the actor’s anniversary, is that the archive-museum does not yet have G.Garbuk’s fund, and his creative personality is revealed through documents preserved in the collections other fund creators: directors, artists, critics, etc. Interesting and informative artifacts are from the funds of theater groups where Gennady Mikhailovich worked: the National Academic Drama Theater named after Y. Kolas, the National Academic Theater named after Y.Kupala, the Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama.
