The State Archive of the Vitebsk Region has prepared a virtual exhibition project «Liberation: «We were torn out of the death camp»

Documents are presented that illustrate one of the most dramatic events of June 1944 – the liberation of about 8,000 prisoners of a concentration camp near the village of Maryanovo, Liozno region.

In May 1944, in the forest near the village of Maryanovo, in close proximity to the front line, the Nazis set up a concentration camp in the forest, to which about 12,000 people were taken from Vitebsk and surrounding settlements to organize a «human shield» in front of the advancing units of the Red Army.
