BSAMLA: on the 38th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy

The Chernobyl tragedy is the largest disaster in the history of nuclear energy, which occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. As a result of the explosion of reactor No. 4, huge amounts of radioactive substances were released into the atmosphere, which led to the death of several dozen people and serious consequences for the health of hundreds of thousands of people, as well as environmental problems in a large territory of the Republic of Belarus, declared by the XI session of the Supreme Council of the BSSR in July 1989, a national environmental disaster zone.

On the eve of the 38th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, the head of the department of information, publication and use of information, candidate of historical sciences, associate professor V.P. Skok prepared a scientific article «Source research potential of the print media of BSAMLA through the prism of spectral analysis of the Chernobyl tragedy,» which will be published in May issue of the socio-political and popular science magazine of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Belarus «Belaruskaya Dumka», recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission for publication of the results of dissertation research. The object of V.P. Skok’s research was a collection of printed media, or rather newspaper publications stored in the funds of BSAMLA. A collection of newspaper clippings from the fund of personal origin of the BSAMLA – Belarusian writer Ales Petrashkevich (F. 450), containing information about the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, was subjected to spectral analysis.

Today BSAMLA remembers those who suffered from the Chernobyl accident and expresses its support to everyone who is still struggling with the consequences of this terrible event. Let this tragedy be a reminder of how important it is to ensure safety when working with nuclear energy and to protect the environment.
