On April 11, 2024, the director of the institution «State Archive of the Gomel Region» (hereinafter referred to as the State Archives) A.N. Suschevich took part in an event dedicated to the International Day of the Liberation of Prisoners of Nazi Concentration Camps, held at the State Educational Institution «Secondary School No. 75 of Gomel».
The memorable event was attended by schoolchildren and teachers of the State Educational Institution «Secondary School No. 75 of Gomel,» as well as the director of the State Academy of Art, A.N. Sushchevich.
During the meeting, the director of the regional archive presented a documentary exhibition prepared by GAG employees: «Life and death in Nazi concentration camps. In memory of prisoners of fascist camps.»
The director of the regional archive drew the attention of those gathered to the fact that the terrible crimes of those war years should not only never be forgotten, but also should not be repeated. We must preserve the truth about the tragedy and heroism of the Belarusians, the genocide of our people and convey it to our descendants. It is necessary to appreciate, remember and be proud of our heritage.
Also in his speech, he spoke about the camps that operated on the territory of Gomel and the Gomel region, dwelling in detail on the complex of German concentration camps – Ozarichi, located in March 1944 on the territory of the Domanovichi district of the Polesie region (now Kalinkovichi district of the Gomel region). The Ozarichi death camp differed from other concentration camps created on the territory of Belarus in that bacteriological weapons, typhus, were used on a large scale here for the first time.
In his report, A.N. Suschevich paid much attention to the Gomel central transit camp – Dulag 121, which existed during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) from September 1941 to October 1943.
In addition, the event participants took part in the challenge: «Cranes of our memory.» Within the framework of which paper cranes were made, which serve as a reference to the memory of the tragic fate of prisoners of fascist concentration camps.
The meeting participants expanded and deepened their knowledge about the historical past of the Belarusian people, about the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War.
At the end of his speech, A.N. Suschevich called on the event participants to show patriotism and active citizenship for the benefit of our Republic of Belarus. So that every citizen of our country understands that there is a Motherland that needs to be loved, protected and protected.
