Press conference «Unique documents and publications from the collections of the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus for the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and the institution of the presidency»

On March 13, 2024, the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus hosted a press conference «Unique documents and publications from the collections of the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus for the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and the institution of the presidency».

At the press conference, the National Archives presented archival documents that reflect the chronology of the formation of the constitutional foundations in Belarus, talk about the progress of the preparation and adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus of 1994 and the introduction of amendments and additions to the Basic Law of the country.

The event took place with the support of the state institution «National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus».

The Constitution of the Republic of Belarus is the Basic Law, which has supreme legal force and direct effect throughout the country. The Constitution was adopted on March 15, 1994 by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus and is the first in the history of a sovereign republic and the fifth Constitution of Belarus.

An important stage in the history of the development of the Belarusian state was the holding of a republican referendum on February 27, 2022 on the issue of introducing amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus. As a result, the preamble and 85 articles were adjusted, 11 new articles appeared, and 2 articles were excluded. Also, the Basic Law was supplemented with a new chapter on the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly. Currently, the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus contains 9 sections, 9 chapters and 156 articles.

The documents presented at the exhibition not only reveal the history of the formation and development of the Main Law on the territory of Belarus, but also show that thanks to fruitful cooperation it is possible to create an information product that will be in demand among a wide range of people and confirm that the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus has always been popular.
