LAWYER’S DAY

On December 8, 2023, the opening of a documentary exhibition prepared by the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus for Lawyer’s Day took place at the Republican Palace of Culture of Trade Unions.

Every year on the first Sunday of December in Belarus, in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus of March 26, 1998 No.157 «On public holidays, public holidays and memorable dates in the Republic of Belarus», Lawyer’s Day is celebrated.

The establishment of this holiday is a tribute to people who guard the rights and legitimate interests of citizens, recognition of the merits of all those who devoted their lives to legal activities that are so necessary for the state. There are few professions in the world as respected, honorable and at the same time difficult as a lawyer. Being a lawyer is a great honor and a great responsibility. There is not a single area of activity that could do without legal support.

On Lawyer’s Day, we pay tribute to the difficult but very important work of notaries and prosecutors, bailiffs and judges, lawyers and investigators, legal advisers and teachers of specialized disciplines. This is a professional holiday of those who ensure compliance with the rule of law in all spheres of our lives, who are distinguished by justice and integrity. In general, lawyers are entrusted with an important mission – the formation of the legal culture of society, respect for legislation, and the legal policy of the state. Serving the Law has been and will be the life credo of all lawyers in Belarus, and knowledge, experience and excellent human qualities ensure the establishment of Belarus as a rule-of-law state.

Recently, Belarusian lawyers have done a tremendous amount of work on amendments to the Constitution of the country. The work on the Basic Document became a truly popular project and united both ordinary citizens who actively participated in the discussion and specialists who formulated and developed legislative innovations and explained their essence to people.

The National Archives of the Republic of Belarus presented documents from the 1920s at the exhibition. on the formation of judicial bodies, a list of legal literature available in the People’s Commissariat of Justice, digital information on the composition of legal institutions of the BSSR, the first orders of the People’s Commissariat and reports of leaders, as well as personal documents of justice workers: certificates, questionnaires, mandates, directions to the congress of justice workers, etc. Impressions of seals and corner stamps of republican and local justice bodies have been preserved. Several documents reveal the complexities of the work of legal scholars during the Great Patriotic War. The State Archive of Film, Photo and Sound Documents presented photographs reflecting the main stages of the formation of the legal system.

Employees of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus and numerous guests of the event got acquainted with the exhibition.
