The State Archive of the Mogilev Region was created on July 5, 1938, simultaneously with the adoption of a new administrative-territorial division of the BSSR. As of 1941, its holdings included 650,000 items. During the Great Patriotic War, most of the archival documents were destroyed during the fighting and occupation period. Some still managed to be evacuated to the Soviet rear. The archive resumed its work first in Krichev in 1943, then in July 1944, after the liberation of Mogilev, it was moved to the regional center.
