«But I wanted to live!» (To the Day of National Memory of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War)

“But I wanted to live! Let it be in the cold, hunger, fear, even in such a nightmarish hell as war, it’s all the same, if only to live, ”wrote V.V. Bykov.

June 22, 2023 – on the 82nd anniversary of the Great Patriotic War – marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the People’s Writer of Belarus, veteran Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov. On this day, the staff of the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art decided to perpetuate the memory of all those who, with weapons in their hands, defended the right to life for themselves and others, paying tribute to the memory of their founders – participants in the Great Patriotic War.

Flowers were laid on the graves:

– People’s Writer of Belarus Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov (wounded during the Kirovograd operation, participant in the operations to liberate Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, etc.), who breathed war all his life and wrote about it in his works (stories “Abelisk”, “Dazhyts and Svіtannya”, “Sign of Byady”, “Sotnіkaў”, etc.),

– writer, theater critic, literary critic Vladimir Borisovich Karpov (underground worker and partisan, awarded the Order of the Red Star and the medal “For Military Merit”), the author of stories known to everyone from the book “Pryznanny ў nanny and love” (1976 ), and in particular – the works “Nyamigi bloody shores” (1962),

– Honored Art Worker of Belarus, poet and prose writer Maxim Luzhanin (real name A.A. Karatay) (after participating in hostilities since 1944, he fought the enemy with a pen in the Vozhyk magazine and the Zvyazda newspaper ), who described wartime in the book “Wide Field of War” (1945),

– People’s Writer of Belarus Ivan Pavlovich Melezh (twice wounded near Rostov-on-Don), who left diaries of 1941–1942. (partially included in the “First Book” (1977), who wrote the novel “Minski Napramak” (1947–1953),

– People’s Writer of Belarus Ivan Petrovich Shamyakin (participant of the Vistula-Oder and Berlin offensive operations) – the author of the novel about the war “The Deep Swimming Pool” (1996), the collection “Troublesome Shchastse: Apovesti” (2008).

Thanks to them, each of us has a chance for life and memory.
