On the presentation of the collection of documents «Minsk Women’s Gymnasium: Photographic Materials»

On June 1, 2023, the presentation of the publication «Minsk Women’s Gymnasium: Photographic Materials» took place at the National Historical Archives of Belarus.

The book is the second collection of documents from the Archival Photo series, which includes photographic materials from the collections of the National Historical Archives of Belarus. The publication presents 443 photographs of the students of the Minsk Women’s Gymnasium, as well as photographs of other persons who ended up in the fund of the institution at different times under various circumstances. Each photo document is accompanied by an annotation that indicates the search data, brief biographical information about the photographed person, the dimensions of the photo document, the content of the inscriptions, the place of creation, indicating the name of the photo studio (if any), its owner and the name of the settlement where it was located. The presented photographs were made in a photo studio that worked on the territory of modern Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia.

Alexey Tsvetkov, Deputy Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, Maxim Makarov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Deputy Director of the NIA of Belarus, addressed the guests of the event, specialist in the history of photography in Belarus during the period of the Russian Empire, head of the department of written and visual sources of the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus Nadezhda Savchenko, Vladimir Denisov, Leading Researcher of the Department for the Use of Documents and Information of the NIA of Belarus, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History of Belarus and Political Science of the Belarusian State Technological University Valentina Ostroga, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Research and Publication Activities of the NIA of Belarus Dmitry Matveychik.

The compiler of the presented edition, the leading researcher of the department of research and publication activities of the NIA of Belarus Sergey Ryndin spoke about the features of the publication series in general and the next series in particular, about the specifics of working with the relevant archival sources, and also shared plans for preparing the next volumes.

For the event, which took place on the International Children’s Day, an exhibition of archival documents with photographs of the students of the Minsk Women’s Gymnasium, which were used in compiling the book, was prepared.
