As part of the republican action «Belarus remembers. We remember everyone» workers of the Belarusian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation laid flowers at the «Pit» memorial located on Melnikaite Street in Minsk.

The memorial was erected on the site of one of the largest Jewish ghettos in Europe. From March 2 to 4, 1942, about five thousand Jews were exterminated here.

The Nazis showed special cynicism and cruelty when liquidating a Jewish orphanage. 200 orphans together with their teachers were simply thrown into a pit and covered with earth. Children screamed and begged for mercy, and an SS officer walked along the ditch and threw candy at them…

A modest obelisk appeared at this place in 1947 – it was the first and for a long time the only monument to the victims of the Holocaust on the territory of the USSR.

In 2000, the sculptural composition «The Last Path» (author Leonid Levin) appeared in the «Pit» memorial complex – a group of doomed martyrs descending to the bottom of the pit.

Archive workers observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Nazi regime.
