About the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus

On February 23, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus opened a documentary exhibition prepared by the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus and dedicated to this memorable date.

The Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus is a public holiday that has its own history.

On February 23, 1918, Red Army detachments won their first victories at Pskov and Narva over the regular troops of Kaiser Germany. These first victories became the birthday of the Red Army. In 1922, this date was officially declared the Day of the Red Army. Since 1946, the holiday has been called the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy.

By Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 157 dated March 26, 1998, the holiday celebrated on February 23 was named the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition project dedicated to the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus presents documents from the archival fund «Collection of leaflets, wall newspapers and posters of party, Komsomol and anti-fascist organizations and partisans of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War». This is a collection of leaflets, as well as combat leaflets of partisan detachments and brigades, wall newspapers and posters of party, Komsomol and anti-fascist organizations created during the Great Patriotic War. The exhibits presented at the exhibition are unique. Great interest among all visitors to the exhibition was aroused by the Order on the management of the People’s Commissariat of the BSSR and the garrison of Minsk, which approved the Program of celebrating the third anniversary of the Red Army on February 23, 1921, as well as the Minutes of the meeting of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviets of the SSR of Belarus on bringing Red Army units to the solemn oath on the day of the fifth anniversary of the Red Army on February 22, 1923 year. The subject range is represented by authentic military awards and insignia that existed in the troops from the beginning of the XX century to the present.

The exhibition presents for the first time the editions of the newspaper collection of the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus: «Zvezda» from February 23, 1919, «Red Star» from February 23, 1941, «Soviet Belarus» from February 23, 1942, «Crush the Fascist hour» from February 23, 1943-44.
