On December 9, the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus (NARB) hosted a round table «The Orthodox Church on the Territory of the Byelorussian SSR in the 1920s-1930s: Documentary Sources and Their Interpretation», dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the archival service of Belarus and the 1030th anniversary of the Orthodox Church in Belarus.
The co-organizers of the event were Polotsk State University Euphrosyne of Polotsk and the Minsk Theological Academy. The round table was held offline and online. As listeners, the event was attended by representatives of the Institute of Theology. Sts. Methodius and Cyril of the Belarusian State University (BSU) and archive workers.
In her welcoming speech, the Deputy Director of the Archive E.A.Stukanova noted the thematic variety of events held on the basis of the NARB within the framework of the Year of Historical Memory and the 100th anniversary of the archival service, and expressed her hope for holding similar scientific meetings on confessional issues in the future. Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of the Institute of Theology of the Belarusian State University O.A.Goransky outlined the important role of archive materials in the study of the religious history of Belarus.
As part of the event, the chief custodian of the funds of the State Archives of the Vitebsk region, candidate of historical sciences K.G.Karpekin made a report «Documents on the history of the Orthodox Abshchyns in the 1920s-1930s. at the funds of the State archive of the Vitebsk region»; Leading Researcher of the Department of Contemporary History of Belarus of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Leading Researcher of the Department for the Use of Documents and Information of the NARB V.G.Mazets made a review of the documents of the state archives of the Republic of Belarus on the state of the Orthodox Church in the Minsk region in the 1920-1930s; the chairman of the Commission for the canonization of the saints of the Gomel diocese, candidate of theology, archpriest A.A.Lopushansky spoke about the significance of the memoirs of archpriest P.Ryllo as a historical source; Associate Professor of the Department of Religious Studies of the Institute of Theology of the Belarusian State University, Candidate of Historical Sciences A.S.Kalinina presented a report on the non-traditional religiosity of the Orthodox population of the BSSR in the 1930s. in the reflection of archival sources; Head of Postgraduate Studies of Polotsk State University, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor V.V.Baranenko turned in his speech to the problem of the preservation of documents of the Russian Orthodox (patriarchal) Church on the example of archival institutions in Belarus; Deputy Head of the NARB Publications Department I.A.Vishnevsky made a report «Materials of the Belarusian Orthodox Holy Synod Foundation as a source on the history of the Orthodox Church on the territory of the BSSR in the 1920s-1930s.». All reports aroused keen interest and discussion.
