On the eve of the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Gomel from the Nazi invaders, in order to involve students in the study of documents on the genocide of the Belarusian people as part of the «Archives for School» campaign from November 15 to 21, 2022, the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» ( hereinafter referred to as GAG) placed two exhibitions on the basis of the school: «November 26, 1943 – the liberation of the city of Gomel», «The crime of the Nazis and their accomplices. Gomel region». Thanks to which, more than 700 students of the State Educational Institution «Secondary School No. 11 of Gomel» will have a unique opportunity to study in detail the archival documents and photographs presented at the exhibition, reflecting the atrocities committed by the Nazis and their accomplices in the occupied territory of the city of Gomel and the region. In continuation of the above topic, on November 17, 2022, a dialogue platform was held at the school: «The Year of Historical Memory 2022. Genocide of the Belarusian people».
The experts of the dialogue platform were:
Skorina Yana Sergeevna, senior assistant to the prosecutor of the Gomel region for legal support, information and public relations, Sushchevich Andrey Nikolaevich, director of the GAGOM, Kornev Sergey Pavlovich, head of military-patriotic education of the State Educational Institution “Secondary School No. 11 in Gomel”.
Yana Sergeevna noted that the General Prosecutor’s Office, as part of the investigation of a criminal case on the fact that Nazi criminals and their accomplices committed the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period, not only takes measures to identify persons involved in crimes, prosecute them, but also carry out measures aimed at preserving the historical memory of the mass destruction of the civilian population and ensuring the ideological continuity of generations.
In his speech, Andrei Nikolayevich spoke about the horrors of the war that the inhabitants of the Gomel region faced. According to archival documents, during the years of occupation, the Nazi invaders shot, hanged and burned 53,630 civilians in the territory of the Gomel region, including more than 3,000 children, 114,476 prisoners of war soldiers. 18,745 civilians were driven into German slavery. Behind each figure is the fate of a person, the fate of a strong generation that was able to survive this horror, defeat and restore our beautiful Belarus from the ruins and ashes.
In continuation of the topic raised, the head of military-patriotic education S.P. Kornev spoke. In his speech, Sergei Pavlovich focused on the fact that we must not forget that genocide is not only the physical deliberate destruction of people, but also the targeted destruction of the cultural and economic potential of the people, the results of their labor and creative heritage.
At the end of the meeting, the experts summed up the results of the above topic, and also called on the participants in the dialogue platform to preserve the heroic heritage of our people. It is necessary to appreciate, remember and be proud of your heritage.
