17 August marks the 115th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Nakhmanovich Bogorad, Hero of the Soviet Union

The future hero was born in Vitebsk in 1907. In 1935 he graduated from the Leningrad Marine Technical School. During the Great Patriotic War, 1941-1945, he fought against the enemy in the Baltic Fleet as an assistant commander and commander of a submarine. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR on July 8, 1945 for exemplary fulfillment of combat tasks, personal courage and heroism displayed in the battles against the Nazi invaders, captain of the 3rd rank S. N. Bogorad was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The hero submariner died on 23 April 1996. He is buried in Riga at the Garrison Cemetery.

On 23 February 2016, a memorial plaque to S. N. Bogorad was unveiled in Vitebsk on the building of the former naval school.
