Educational paleography practice of the students of the History Faculty of Belarusian State University

On July 4-23, 2022 the National Historical Archives of Belarus conducted the educational paleography practice for the 1st year students of History Faculty of Belarusian State University, speciality “History and Archival Studies”. The aim of the nternship was to give the students the complete idea about the pre-existing and surviving complexes of manuscripts on the history of
Belarus of the 14th-18th centuries, paleographic features and external attributes of documents, and to strengthen the knowledge and skills obtained in the course “Special historical disciplines. Paleography”.

The objectives of the internship were:

– acquaintance with the collections of the National Historical Archives of Belarus of the 14th-18th centuries, the collections of manuscripts of other specialized institutions in the country, the features of their inventory, description, storage and use;

– practical use and improvement of skills in reading Cyrillic manuscripts of the 14th-17th centuries when working with original documents;

– an understanding of the role of paleography in the description of archival documents, the development of finding aids, and archival publishing;

– studying the material basis of documents, applying in practice the skills of filigraphic analysis of manuscripts on paper.

During the internship the students met with the administration of the National Archives, got acquainted with its history, organizational structure, functions of the departments, composition of the collections, and received an idea of the preservation measures for the documents of the 14th-18th centuries. The students also visited the Hall of Manuscripts, Rare Books and Old Printed Editions and the Book Museum of the National Library of Belarus.

Most of the time the students spent on fulfilling an individual assignment. Its content involved paleographic processing of two original documents of different time with the text of Cyrillic script of the 16th century – first half of the 17th century.
