To the 105th anniversary of Sergey Selikhanov (1917-1976), sculptor, People’s Artist of Belarus, participant of the Great Patriotic War
Sergey Selikhanov was born on March 8 (February 23), 1917 in Petrograd. In 1921 his family moved to Orsha, where in 1923-1933 Sergey studied at a secondary school and at the same time in the circle of fine arts. In 1937 he graduated from the Vitebsk Art College (studied under F. Vogt and L. Leitman). In 1940 he moved to Minsk. During the Great Patriotic War, he was in the ranks of the Soviet Army. He participated in the battles of Moscow and Rzhev, on the Kalinin and Voronezh fronts, at the Kursk Bulge, forced the crossing of the Dnieper, fought in Silesia and ended the war in Prague. After demobilization he returned to Minsk and was engaged only in creative activities. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, the Badge of Honor, and the Medal “For Courage”.
The Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art (BGAMLI) holds the personal collection of Sergei Selikhanov (Fond No. 173), which comprises photographs of his works (sculptural portraits, genre compositions, etc.), a small collection of paintings (portraits, portrait sketches, landscape sketches), materials relating to his biography and creative work, photos from various events and meetings.
