Opening of a virtual exhibition dedicated to the 115th anniversary of Pyotr Alsmik, an outstanding scientist and plant breeder
The website of the Belarusian State Archives of Scientific and Technical Documentation has published materials of the exhibition dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of Pyotr Ivanovich Alsmik (27.02.1907 – 02.04.1992).
Thanks to his talent, deep thinking, extraordinary ability to conduct scientific research and analyse the obtained scientific data, he made an invaluable contribution to the development of the plant growing industry of the country.
From 1931, Pyotr Alsmik was engaged in potato selection at the Belarusian Zonal Potato Experimental Station. From 1956, all the potato research in the Republic was concentrated in the Belarusian Research Institute of Potato, Fruit and Vegetable Growing (BelNIIKPO) (Samokhvalovichi, Minsk district), where Pyotr Alsmik headed the potato selection department for more than 30 years and was the permanent head of the republican and union scientific research topics on potato breeding.
Under his leadership, such cancer-resistant potato varieties as “Trudovoy”, “Partizan”, “Zvenyevoy”, “Agronomic”, “Zazersky” were bred.
