The Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art holds ХХI Uzvyshsha Readings

On May 26, 2021, the Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art (BGAMLI) hosted the Twenty-First Uzvyshsha Readings, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the literary association “Uzvyshsha”. The conference was attended by staff members of BGAMLI, the Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the National Library of Belarus, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, and the Maxim Bogdanovich Literary Museum.

The participants were greeted by Aleksey Tsvetkov, Deputy Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, who emphasized the importance of archives for preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the country. Director of BGAMLI Anna Zapartyko presented the second issue of the archival and literary almanac “Autograph” prepared by the archive’s staff.

At the plenary session, Tatsiana Lavrik, Master of Philology, presented a virtual project “On the Wave of Time, in the Flow of Life” dedicated to the Maladnyak Literary Association – “Project of Four”, created by the National Library of Belarus together with the Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art, the State Museum of the History of Belarusian Literature and the Maladosts magazine. The speaker told about the pages dedicated to writers Vladimir Dubovka, Kuzma Chorny, Yan Skrygan and Zmitrok Byadulya.

The following reports were especially interesting and some of them sparked a lively discussion: “The Secret Biographers of Anton Adamovich” (Natalia Gordienko), “The Trial by Unfreedom: Anton Adamovich in the 1910s – 1940s” (Olga Shatalova), “Leni Riefenstahl of Belarusian Poetry, or the Social Order of Eugenia Pflaumbaum” (Oksana Danilchik), “The book “Memories about Zmіtrok Byadulya” (1988): on the history of the publication” (Victor Zhibul), “Lacunas and euphemistic linguistic figures in biographies of repressed writers in the reference literature of the late 1950s – early 1960s” (Mikhail Baranovsky), “The Most Cultured Artist in Minsk: Aron Kastelyansky as an art critic of “Uzvyshsha” (Nadezhda Usova), “Railway Topos in Belarusian Poetry in the 1920s-1930s” (Zhanna Shaladonova), “K. Chorny, K. Krapiva, M. Luzhanin. Former writers of “Uzvyshsha” in the life of Ya. Bryl (based on the writer’s epistolary)” (Valery Nazarov), “The example of “Uzvyshsha” as a factor of the party’s policy in the field of fiction” (Anna Zapartko).

The event also included the opening of the exhibition “Then you can talk to the universe! ..” timed to the 95th anniversary of “Uzvyshsha”. Its main theme is the organization’s participation in international literary relations. The exhibition features translations by foreign authors made by Uzvyshsha writers, publications in periodicals, correspondence, and photographs.
