On the Participation of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus in the Joint Exhibition Project «The Constitution – the Fundamental Law of the State»

On March 12, 2026, a joint exhibition project opened at the Museum of Contemporary Belarusian Statehood, a branch of the National History Museum of the Republic of Belarus, to commemorate the Day of the Adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.

The Constitution is the fundamental law of the state. Among the key principles enshrined in the Constitution are the rule of law, the guarantee and observance of human and civil rights, and the democratic formation of government bodies. The Constitution embodies the historical experience of the development of Belarusian statehood. It is based on the inalienable sovereign right of the Belarusian people to independently determine their destiny and be a full-fledged member of the international community. On February 27, 2022, a national referendum was held in Belarus. A majority of citizens (82.86% of those who participated in the vote, or 65.17% of the total electorate) voted in favor of amendments and additions to the Constitution. The updated Constitution, which enshrined the status of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, entered into force on March 15, 2022.

The National Archives of the Republic of Belarus provided copies of archival documents for the exhibition: the Law of the Republic of Belarus of March 15, 1994 «On the Procedure for the Entry into Force of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus», minutes of the meeting of the working group of the Constitutional Commission of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR, the Resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Belarus «On Holding a National Referendum in the Republic of Belarus and Measures to Ensure It», minutes of the Central Commission of the Republic of Belarus for Elections and National Referendums, and other documents. The exhibition also features printed publications from the collection of the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus and materials from the National History Museum of the Republic of Belarus, as well as gifts from foreign delegations.

This exhibition, dedicated to Constitution Day of the Republic of Belarus, chronicles the development of constitutional principles in Belarus, chronicles the preparation and adoption of the 1994 Constitution, and the amendments and additions to it in response to rapidly changing political, socioeconomic, and cultural realities.
