The National Historical Archives of Belarus has prepared and posted a virtual exhibition «The Great European War: for the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I» on the archive’s website.
In 2024, humanity will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918. During this period, the Belarusian lands were directly involved in an armed conflict of unprecedented scale. The war had a huge impact on all aspects of life in the Belarusian provinces. In 1915, a military front stretched across Belarus, as a result of which 25% of its territory was under foreign occupation. The Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the headquarters of corps and divisions were located on the territory of Belarus, numerous military formations and units of various branches of the armed forces operated. During the war, approximately 600 thousand people from the Belarusian provinces were called up for military service.
The exhibition displays documents from 1914-1918, including letters from the front of students of the Rogachev Teachers’ Seminary, lists of military units on the territory of Belarus, reports on foreign prisoners of war and Chinese workers, photographs of military personnel, maps of military operations, and a number of others.
The identification and selection of materials was carried out by the head of the research and publication department Sergei Ryndin and leading researcher of the department of use of documents and information Vladimir Denisov.
