Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus

On May 26, 2023, at the Center for Research on Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, a solemn signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Center and the institution «Belarusian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents» (hereinafter – BGAKFFD) took place. This document consolidates the already established relationship between the two institutions in matters of scientific research in the field of studying and popularizing the Belarusian screen heritage, clarifying and improving the scientific reference apparatus of the archive, and attributing newsreel material.

As part of the same event, employees of the Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus donated a unique film document «Old Belarusian People’s Theater» to the BGAKFFD. Filmed in 1962 in the village of Belevichi, Slutsk region, the film belongs to a small and little-studied category of scientific cinema – research. Created solely by scientists, without the involvement of professional cameramen and directors, as well as television studio equipment, the film tells about a unique phenomenon – the folk puppet theater batleyke. This film document has great scientific value. It combines the interests of scientists from various fields: historians, art critics, ethnographers, folklorists, theater critics. Undoubtedly, the BGAKFFD will preserve this film for future generations, will make real folk art closer to our contemporaries, – summed up the meeting the director of the archive A.N.Gonchar.
