June 15, 1942: the village of Borki is the sister of Khatyn

On March 22, 2023, the Republic of Belarus remembers the tragic events in the village of Khatyn, Logoisk district, which took place exactly 80 years ago.

The burning of Khatyn has become a symbol of all partially and completely burned villages in Belarus. Among the destroyed settlements there are also representatives of the Mogilev region. The most famous of them is the village of Borki, Kirovsky district, Mogilev region.

In the documents of the archival fund of the Mogilev Regional Commission for Assistance in the Work of the Emergency State Commission for Investigating and Establishing the Atrocities of the Nazi Invaders and Their Accomplices and Recording the Damage Caused by Them in the Mogilev Region in the State Archive of the Mogilev Region, there is documentary evidence of eyewitnesses of the burning of the village of Borki, which was carried out on June 15, 1942 by the punitive detachments of Oscar Paul Dirlewanger and August Ferdinandovich Barchik. Their victims were 1738 people.

The tragedy of the village of Borki is immortalized on the pages of the story “The Punishers” by A. Adamovich and the poem “Maryika” by A. Kazeko.
