14 April 2022 marks the 85th anniversary of the birth of Sergey Filimonov, PhD in Architecture, associate professor, one of the creators of the Palace of Sports in Minsk
The website of the Belarusian State Archives of Scientific and Technical Documentation has published the materials of the exhibition dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Sergey Filimonov, the well-known Belarusian architect.
Sergei Filimonov actively participated in the development of the Belarusian capital, designed the Dynamo Sports Complex in the area of Komsomolskoye Lake (1995), the building of the Architectural and Construction College on Zm. Byadulya Street and a 108-apartment block on Chervyakov Street in Minsk (1971), the Palace of Culture in Soligorsk (1968), a 1000-seat auditorium for the Gorki Agricultural Academy (1962), the Horizon Hotel on Lenin Square in Baranovichi (1980), a 64-apartment block with a store on Sovetskaya Street in Baranovichi (1975). He designed a total of 40 public and dwelling buildings and complexes [F. 232, op. 1, d. 64, l.1].
The most famous project by Sergey Filimonov is the Palace of Sports located at 4, Pobediteley Avenue, Minsk.
The Palace of Sports in Minsk has become an outstanding phenomenon in Soviet architectural practice. Its design was repeated in the cities of Chelyabinsk (1967), Volgograd (1974), Dnepr, and served as the prototype for the Palace of Sports in Vilnius.
Filimonov successfully combined his work in the architectural and design studio with his lecturing activities at the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute, where he was head of the Architecture Department since 1973. He trained 50 specialists in architecture [F. 232, op. 1, d. 64, l. 2]. The graduation projects of his students were recognized at the All-Union competitions and shows [F. 232, op. 1, d. 64, l. 2].
Along with teaching work, Filimonov participated in research on individual architectural themes concerned with the architecture of residential and public buildings in towns and villages and their reconstruction. He participated in creative competitions, international seminars, meetings and congresses [F. 232, op. 1, d. 64, l. 2].
Filimonov was the author of 72 scholarly papers. His monographs “The Architecture of Universal Gyms and Sport Halls” (1980) and “The Architecture of Public Buildings in Belarus” (1985) are still in demand among students of architecture.
