Yefim Fyodorovich Karsky
(1861-1931)
Philologist-Slavist, folklorist, palaeographer, ethnographer.
Prominent researcher of the culture of the Belarusian people, the language
and literature of other Slavonic peoples. Founder of Belarusian scholarly
linguistics and literary studies. Author of over 700 scholarly papers in
Belarusian, Russian and Slavonic studies, including fundamental works in
dialectology, history of Belarusian language and literature, folklore,
ethnography, Old-Russian palaeography etc. His fundamental work «Belarusians» is the highest achievement
of European Slavonic studies in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries, a real encyclopaedia in the study of Belarusian language,
literature and culture.
Member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Saint Petersburg (from 1916,
correspondent member from 1901), the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917), the
Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925), a full member of the Institute of
Belarusian Culture (later the Belarusian Academy of Sciences, 1922) and the
Czech Academy of Sciences (1929).

– Yefim Karsky was born on 1 January 1861 (20 December 1860, Old
Style).
Father Fyodor Nikolayevich Novitsky – psalmist at Lasha Church and teacher in a
folk school at Lasha. Mother Magdalina Onufrievna Karskaya – daughter of a
clergyman. Karsky was recorded under the surname of his mother as his parents’ marriage
had not yet been registered.
