1863-1864 Uprising in Belarus

About the project

The Project “The 1863-1864 Uprising in Belarus” is a special rubric on the Archives of Belarus website, an internet resource of the archives and RM authorities and the state archives network in the Republic of Belarus, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of this historical event.

Purposes of the project

The project aims to show by means of documentary sources the situation in Belarus in the context of the 1863-1864 uprising and to make it easier for citizens to access records held in the archives of the Republic of Belarus by creating in the Internet global computer network a more complete information picture on the subject.

Structure of the project

The rubric consists of three sections:

  • An overview of the uprising
  • An online exhibition of records and materials on the uprising selected from six state archives in the Republic of Belarus
  • A summary information on three published collections of documents on the uprising from the holdings of Belarusian archives.

The exhibition shows 500 records and materials (their electronic copies) available from the National Historical Archives of Belarus in Minsk, National Historical Archives of Belarus in Grodno, Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art, Belarusian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings, National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, and Belarusian Research Center for Electronic Records.

The exposition consists of 16 thematic groups illustrating different stages and aspects of the uprising. These illuminate the events on the eve of the uprising, the situation in Belarus during the uprising and after its suppression. Also, there are data relating to the commemoration of the uprising.

The material is structured in two levels:

– List of records and materials, including their title, date (19th century records are dated in the Old Style), type, language and location index. Records and materials are arranged in chronological order. On the right are the links to view a full-size record.

– Digital copies of records and materials.

The bulk of the exposition are textual records – prints, typescripts, hand-written documents (originals and copies, in full and fragments). The majority of texts are in Russian. A considerable part of data are in Belarusian (including Belarusian in Latin script). Some records are in Polish, with the translation into Russian or Belarusian. On display are the official records created by the participating sides (different structures of the tsarist administration and relating to the activities of the insurgents). Also, there are personal records (memoirs, letters) of the participants in the events.

The rest of the exposition are photographs mainly depicting participants in the events and memorial sites. The sound and film records are presented in the form of fragments extracted from works of art.
