12 November 2018
A ceremonial opening of the new building of the Local State Archives in Slutsk (Minsk Region) took place on 7 November 2018.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of Minsk Region Executive Committee A. Isachenko, Deputy Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management O. Ledovskaya, Deputy Chairman of Slutsk District Executive Committee D. Korolyov and other honoured guests.

The construction of the new building has been completed on the sidelines of the investment program for Minsk Region. 2,8 million rubles have been spent. The total area of the building is 2 177 sq meters. The area of the archival repository has increased thrice and is now 660 sq meters expected to receive 440 000 storage files. The building is equipped with mobile shelves, modern systems of ventilation and video monitoring, burglar alarm, fire system, a miniature boiler. There is a reading room and an exhibition hall. A local computer network has been installed for work with the Standard Archive Automated Information System. The Archive has acquired new scanning and computer equipment.

The Local State Archives in Rechitsa (Gomel Region) hosts an exhibition dedicated to 73rd anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. The exhibition is entitled “The memory of Nazi crimes in the area of Rechitsa District in archival records”.
Members of the Rechitsa District Council of War and Labour Veterans visited the exhibition and acquainted with archival documents highlighting the policy of Nazi Germans towards Soviet citizens. The guests were given a tour of the Archives.

On 30 October 2018 the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus held a board meeting to discuss the issue “On the work of reading rooms in the state archives”.

The meeting reviewed the activity of reading rooms in the state archives for the period of 2015 to the first half of 2018. A special attention was paid to the improvement of technical equipment in reading rooms and the use of access records in them.

Following the discussion the decision was adopted to make changes (amendments) to the Instruction on the Procedure of Use of Archival Records in Reading Rooms in State Archives, approved by Resolution of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus of 24 May 2012 No. 133.

The First International Forum of Young Historians and Archivists took place in Moscow from 9 to 13 September 2018. The organizer of the Forum is the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists with the support of the Russian Historical Society, the History of Motherland Foundation, and the Russian State University for the Humanities. The Forum aims at consolidating young archivists in Russia and close foreign countries to create a single information field for exchange of information and further communication between young archivists in the member countries.

The young staff members of the State Archives of Minsk Region, archivists Olga Lisyuk and Natalia Kanashevskaya, attended the meeting.

The ceremonial opening of the Forum was held at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation on 10 September, with a welcome speech delivered by Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities Alexander Bezborodov, Deputy Chair of the Board of the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists Grigory Lanskoy and Dean of the Archives Faculty at the History and Archives Institute Elena Malysheva. The guests had an excursion of the Russian State University for the Humanities and the History and Archives Institute.

During the Forum the participants visited the State Archives of the Russian Federation, where they had a tour of the archives and the educational section from the experts. The original copy of Tsar Nicholas II’s Manifesto of Abdication from the Throne and his personal diary aroused an especially great interest among the participants.

On the third day of the Forum the participants went to the town of Krasnogorsk in Moscow Region to visit the Russian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings. In the cinema room of the Archives they watched a selection of unique video footage devoted to the life of the Tsar’s family in 1896-1916, the session of the First State Duma in 1906 and other important events of the past. The young archivists also visited the archival repositories of film records, photographs, video and sound recordings and got acquainted with the work of different divisions and the principles of digitization and processing of video documents on the tape.

The ceremonial closing of the First International Forum of Young Historians and Archivists took place on 13 September at the Main Archival Administration of the City of Moscow. The participants had a tour of the Central State Archives of Moscow City and later at the conference hall presented their reports and presentations on the development of archive business in their countries. Members of the State Archives of Minsk Region read their reports “The history of archive business in the Republic of Belarus” (Olga Lisyuk) and “The State Archives of Minsk Region in 1938-2018” (Natalia Kanashevskaya).

On 17-18 October Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus Viktor Kurash had a working visit to Brest Region.

During his trip V. Kurash visited the State Archives of Brest Region and the Local State Archives in Kobrin, where he got acquainted with the material and technical basis of the archives. At the State Archives of Brest Region, Director V. Kurash took part at the opening of the second stage of the republic-level professional contest “The Best Archivist of Belarus”.

The visit also included a meeting with S. Kalinovsky, Chief of the Justice Administration at the Brest Regional Executive Committee, in which they discussed issues related to the development of archive business in the region.

The final stage of the republic-level professional contest “The Best Archivist of Belarus” was held on 17-18 October at the State Archives of Brest Region. 17 archivists participated at the contest.

The organizers of the contest are the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus and the public association “The Belarusian Society of Archivists” with the support of the Belarusian Trade Union of Workers of Government Institutions and Other Organizations.

The objectives of the contest are to bring out and support the best archivists with high professional level, to create a positive image of the archive business, to increase the social status of the archive profession and to encourage archivists to research more the history of Belarus on the basis of archival documents.

The contest included two stages. At the first stage the contesters presented their works on the topic “The small homeland in the documents of the National Archival Holdings of the Republic of Belarus”. The second stage was conducted in the form of theoretical and practical tasks on the legal aspects of the activities at the state archival institutions.

The winners of the contest have been presented with diplomas and prizes – Svetlana Kuzina (division head at the Local State Archives in Kobrin); Tatiana Ageyenko (leading research fellow at the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus); Natalia Fedotova-Shner (leading archivist at the State Archives of Vitebsk Region) and Yulia Gryadovka (leading archivist at the Local State Archives in Orsha).

A source guide “Monuments of Law in Belarus in the 14th-16th Centuries: Regional Charters of Privilege” has been released.

The book contains information on Belarusian monuments of law of the 14th-16th centuries - regional charters of privilege. Includes data on the location of original records and their copies, publications, translations and historical literature. The book is illustrated with photocopies of records.

The edition is intended for archivists, documentary publishers, legal scholars, historians and students.

The Local State Archives in Kobrin (Brest Region) holds an exhibition of archival documents and photographs to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Archives. The exhibition has been prepared on the basis of records available from the Archives.

On 11 October 2018 Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry Viktor Kurash and Director of the National Historical Archives of Belarus Dmitry Yatsevich held a meeting with Piotr Dymmel, Director of the State Archives in Lublin, the Republic of Poland.
The meeting discussed issues and perspectives of cooperation between the National Historical Archives of Belarus and the State Archives in Lublin.
The two archives signed an agreement for copying of documents.

The participants at the meeting included Grigory Zholnerkevich, Head of Organizational Work, Information and Use of Records at the Department and Vladimir Denisov, Chief Archivist and Head of Exhibition Activities at the National Historical Archives of Belarus.
