The archives of the Department of Labor, Employment, and Social Protection of the Population of the Bragin District Executive Committee<\/strong> hold a letter from Great Patriotic War veteran Maxim Yakovlevich Pekhota<\/strong>, dated November 28, 1943 (F.186, Op.3, D.93, L.59-59ob), to the village of Chemerisy, Khrakovichsky (now Chemerissky) Village Council, Bragin District. The text of the letter reads:<\/p>\n

\u00abHello, my dear wife, Khristina Kalenikova, and children, Senka and Mashka. I am still alive and well, and I wish the same for you in your lives.<\/p>\n

For two and a half years, my heart ached for my beloved family. And I learned that on November 17, 1943, our troops liberated my native village and, perhaps, my beloved family. I was not far from you on that same day. But I have not yet had the opportunity to meet with you. But soon the day and hour will come when I will return to my beloved family. I am now on the right bank of the Dnieper.<\/p>\n

That’s all for now, goodbye. I await news from you. I sense that something unpleasant happened to my family back in late 1941. Goodbye again. Your husband, M.Ya.Pekhota\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n

The \u00abMemory of the People\u00bb website (pamyat-naroda.ru)<\/strong> indicates that Maxim Pekhota was born in 1906 in the village of Chemerisy. He fought in the Great Patriotic War in the 101st Howitzer Artillery Brigade. On July 30, 1944, Private Pekhota was awarded the Medal \u00abFor Military Merit\u00bb, and on May 21, 1945, the Medal \u00abFor Courage\u00bb.<\/p>\n

According to data from the household register for the village of Chemerisy for 1944-1946 (F.194, Op.3, D.8, L.55ob-56), Maxim Pekhota had a family: his wife, Khristina, and daughters, Ksenia and Maria (who died during the specified period).<\/p>\n
