The Zonal State Archives in Polotsk<\/strong> has prepared a book and documentary exhibition, \u00abA Name in History: Pilot Alexander Mamkin\u00bb<\/strong>, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the hero’s birth. The exhibition features archival documents, printed publications about Operation Zvezdochka, and photographs, including images created using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Alexander Petrovich Mamkin was born in 1916. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he was already an experienced pilot, and in 1944, he was a flight commander in the 105th Guards, Order of Alexander Nevsky, Panev\u0117\u017eys Separate Aviation Regiment of the Civil Air Fleet. The pilot had over 400 combat sorties to his credit, including 70 night sorties behind enemy lines, during which time he delivered 20,000 kilograms of ammunition and food to the partisans.<\/p>\n

On the night of April 10-11, 1944, he flew his ninth \u00abfire mission\u00bb behind enemy lines. Alexander Mamkin’s slow, unarmed plane was hit by German anti-aircraft fire and then attacked by an enemy fighter. Burning alive and suffering a severe head wound, the pilot landed the plane, which was losing control, on the ice of a lake behind the front lines.<\/p>\n

This final mission was a heroic achievement: at the cost of his own life, Alexander Mamkin saved 10 orphans, their teacher, and two wounded partisans whom he was transporting on board.<\/p>\n

Doctors fought for his life for several days, but were unable to save the hero. On April 17, 1944, Alexander Petrovich Mamkin died from his wounds in the hospital. His fellow soldiers initially buried the pilot in the village of Maklok, Velizh District, near the walls of the Trinity Church. In the 1970s, his ashes were reburied in the city of Velizh at the Lidova Gora memorial complex.<\/p>\n

On September 17, 2024, a memorial to the participants of Operation Zvezdochka was unveiled in Polotsk.<\/p>\n
