This day, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, was held for employees of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus and national archival institutions.

The event was held in person and via videoconference, allowing participants from across the country to join in the discussion of pressing issues of preserving historical memory.

The speaker was Svyatoslav Valentinovich Kulinok, Deputy Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus and PhD in History.

In his speech, Svyatoslav Kulinok elaborated on the essence of Nazi Germany’s occupation policy, focusing on the criminal investigation into the genocide of the Belarusian people during the occupation.

The speaker argued why Belarus has the right to speak about the genocide of the Belarusian people. The expert reported that all forms of genocide, which were later enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of December 9, 1948, were committed against the civilian population of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War.

Specifically, the mass extermination of the Belarusian population by the Nazi invaders and their accomplices, the forced exploitation of the Belarusian people, and the creation of intolerable and uninhabitable conditions.

One of the methods Nazi Germany used to carry out genocide was death camps—places for the mass detention and extermination of people.

The true tragedy of the Belarusian people was the destruction of rural settlements—villages, towns, and hamlets—by the Nazis and their accomplices. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it has now been established that more than 12,800 rural settlements were partially or completely destroyed or damaged during the occupation. Archivists and the archival documents they uncovered undoubtedly played a significant role in establishing these facts, providing irrefutable and impartial evidence of the commission of horrific crimes.

Svyatoslav Kulinok also noted that the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus is systematically working to introduce archival documents on the genocide of the Belarusian people into scholarly circulation. Over the past 25 years, over 50 collections of documents have been published, and over 10,000 new archival documents have been introduced into scholarly circulation.

The speaker also noted that Belarusian archivists were among the first in the post-Soviet space to begin working on the topic of punitive operations carried out in Belarus.

Summing up the meeting, the participants emphasized the significance of the event, noting that preserving the historical memory of the tragic and heroic pages of the Great Patriotic War is not only a tribute to the generation of victors but also a lesson from the past to strengthen the present and future of Belarus.

Pictured: During the event

On June 5, 2026, a Unified Information Day on the topic «Memory for the Future» was held for employees of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry…

[2

post-1024860","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
