The archive-museum staff toured the monumental Izborsk Fortress, a 14th-century monument steeped in numerous legends, and also took a magnificent walk to the Slovene Springs, now revered as sacred. The first day’s program continued with a sightseeing tour of Pskov, «Russia Begins Here», during which the archivists thoroughly explored the Kremlin, Dovmont’s Town, and Trinity Cathedral. The day concluded with a visit to the active Holy Dormition Pskov-Caves Monastery, where the participants viewed Christian relics and explored the monastery’s unique landmarks.

The second day of the trip was no less eventful and was entirely devoted to the Novgorod region. Their introduction to Veliky Novgorod began with a comprehensive sightseeing tour: they visited the Kremlin Park, the famous 11th-century St. Sophia Cathedral, the historic Yaroslav’s Court district, and the ancient Marketplace. The program continued with a visit to the Varlaam-Khutynsky Monastery, dating from the 16th to 19th centuries.

The trip concluded with a country excursion to the southern outskirts of Veliky Novgorod, home to the Novgorod Museum of Folk Wooden Architecture «Vitoslavitsy». Here, the participants were able to appreciate the splendor of the wooden architecture of the Russian North, assembled into a unique open-air exhibition. The archivists examined authentic churches, huts, and outbuildings from the 16th to 19th centuries, and also visited peasant dwellings, where they learned firsthand about the traditional way of life, customs, and practices of Russian peasants.

The trip provided the team with a wealth of vivid impressions and expanded their knowledge of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Russia’s regions.

1.
